NITRATES AND KINOGEISTS
An exhibition of rare European Silent Film posters plus new artworks by legendary British artist Dave McKean
Century Guild brings legendary multi-media artist Dave McKean to America for an extremely special and extremely limited engagement, presented at the historic Portage Theatre in Chicago! "Nitrate and Kinogeists" will display both Century Guild's inventory of historically significant and undeniably beautiful silent film posters, most of which have been lost and unseen by the public before now, as well as McKean's latest paintings from his haunting current body of work, Nitrate, inspired by the silent era of cinema.
The two-day event features screenings of silent films that have inspired McKean, live performers, and other special surprises to be revealed. Friday the 17th begins with an artist's reception at 6pm and concludes with a showing of F.W. Murnau's 1926 Gothic masterpiece, Faust at 9pm. On Saturday, there will be a special screening at 9pm of Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman's feature film for the Jim Henson Company MirrorMask with McKean himself introducing. McKean's rarely seen short films will precede. Admission is $18/ day, 6pm- midnight or two-day passes are available for $30.
Original artworks and limited edition prints of both Dave McKean's artworks and the rare silent film posters on display will be available for sale, as well as the exhibition catalogue "Kinogeists", with text by Thomas Negovan and introduction by Dave McKean.
Dave McKean lives and works in Kent, England. His style has become inescapable to anyone cognizant of pop culture: he has illustrated and designed covers for the most respected comics of the late 20th century (The Sandman, Arkham Asylum) designed, illustrated, and photographed over 150 CD covers (The Rolling Stones, Tori Amos, Alice Cooper) and created imagery and designs for ad campaigns (Nike, Kodak, BMW) and magazines (The New Yorker, Mojo, Playboy). He has illustrated children's books written by acclaimed writer Neil Gaiman (Coraline), has worked on film and book projects with Iain Sinclair, John Cale, Jonathan Carroll and Stephen King. He was a conceptual artist on the "Harry Potter" films and developed the film MirrorMask with Neil Gaiman for the Jim Henson Company which he also directed.
Century Guild, established in 1999 by art historians Thomas Negovan and Stuart Tomc, specializes in brokering Art Nouveau and Symbolist art and objects 1880-1920 to museum collections. The Chicago Tribune listed them as "one of the must-see exhibits in Artropolis 2009."

Boyce Avenue

BOYCE AVENUE
Boyce Avenue, a Florida-based band popular for its strong acoustic roots and constant drive toward a melody- and harmony-driven rock sound, consists of the three brothers Alejandro, Fabian, and Daniel Manzano, and Stephen Hatker. The band first came together in 2000, when Alejandro (lead vocals, guitar, piano) and Fabian (guitar, vocals), then 14 and 16 years old, respectively, started playing guitar. Within 3 months, Alejandro and Fabian took to the stage with their older brother Daniel (bass, percussion, vocals), then 20 years old, to perform before an audience of over 350 at a Pine View High School show. This would be the first of many public performances for the band at the school where its members had all been students together throughout their childhoods.
In the years that followed, the band was separated geographically, while Fabian pursued an Architecture degree at the University of Florida and Daniel left Florida to attend Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Nonetheless, during this period, Boyce Avenue assembled at every available opportunity to collaborate musically. It was not until October of 2004 and the subsequent months, however, that Boyce Avenue would really come into its own. Daniel, who had recently graduated from law school, reconnected with the band in Florida as its full-time bassist, and Alejandro, at the age of 18, launched into writing the band's first original song, "Find Me." In the following months, the band performed locally in its hometown of Sarasota, and in April of 2005, the band hit the stage at Pine View High School for the last time. The band's performance at the Mr. Pine View competition, an event which Alejandro would go on to win, was covered in the local press.
Upon Alejandro's graduation from high school, he joined Fabian at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, where the band refined its signature sound playing out in traditional venues like Market Street and Side Bar, primarily with the help of drummer-friend Stephen Hatker, formerly of Code 55. In October of 2006 and the months that followed, the band recorded its first three singles at Nickel and Dime Studios near Atlanta, Georgia. The project was engineered by Kris Sampson (Train, the Black Crowes) and produced by Don McCollister (Sister Hazel, Third Day). In 2007 and 2008, Boyce Avenue was honored in several songwriting competitions judged by a host of accomplished and renowned music industry artists, professionals, and executives. The band qualified as a Southeast Semifinalist in the 2007 IMWS competition; "All The While" was selected as a Semi-Finalist in the 2007 International Songwriting Competition, and as one of twelve Lennon Award Winners in the 2007 John Lennon Songwriting Contest; "Find Me" was selected as a Finalist in the Pop category for the U.S.A. Songwriting Competition; and "Hear Me Now (piano acoustic)" was selected as a finalist in the Best Group/Duo category for the IAMA songwriting competition.
Focused on the completion of a debut album, Boyce Avenue took a hiatus from its public performance schedule to write, produce, and record additional singles. In July of 2007, the band returned to Atlanta, Georgia, this time to record three songs at the Electron Gardens Studio in the historic Biltmore Hotel. These songs were engineered by Gary Pfaff and Tim Delaney, and were produced by Boyce Avenue. In October of the same year, the band finished tracking for the debut album with the recording of two songs at RMP Studios in Orlando, Florida, with the assistance of friend Stephen Hatker on drums. The final three songs for the album, "Dare To Believe," "On My Way," and "Hear Me Now (piano acoustic)" were engineered at RMP Studios by Veit Renn (Jennifer Hudson) and Adam Barber (Creed, Shinedown, Alterbridge), and were produced by Boyce Avenue. Within a few months of this time, Stephen Hatker, formally joined Boyce Avenue as its full-time drummer, and the band relocated to Sarasota, Florida.
The debut album, titled "All You’re Meant To Be," was released by Boyce Avenue on March 25, 2008. All of the songs were mixed by Austin Deptula (Eisley, New Found Glory), and the entire project was mastered by Rodney Mills (Pearl Jam, REM, Sheryl Crow). The physical album is available worldwide exclusively through www.campuscustom.com/boyceavenue, while the download versions can be found on iTunes/ Amazon.com/ Rhapsody/ Napster/ eMusic. Since the album's release, it has been written about in CNN Money, the Kings of A&R, and in other press, its songs have been featured on various MTV shows, and the band has established itself as one of the top 8 Artists of All-Time on YouTube, with over 90 million hits. Most recently, "All You're Meant To Be" has been licensed for sale nationwide in the Philippines through MCA Music, and is on path to Gold status. On the strength of the band's touring success in the United States and the Philippines, the band is poised to launch a worldwide tour in 2009.

Brave Combo
Los Skarnales + Pinata Protest

BRAVE COMBO
www.brave.com/bo
Brave Combo. Rarely, if ever, has a band name been more apropos, not only at the group's inception, but even more so 26 years after the fact. At first glance, back in 1979, the Denton, Texas, based outfit was, in shorthand, pegged as a New Wave polka band, a courageous if not almost oxymoronic endeavor during that particular rebirth of the cool. Yet it clicked and launched a stunning run that has now catapulted it into the new century. Over the last 26 years, Brave Combo has collected a dizzying array of descriptive musical pegs, boldly going where few bands have gone before, and even fewer could (or would) dare to venture. Succeeding in its first mission, Brave Combo is America's premier contemporary polka band, and a Grammy winning one at that. In the same breath, to name some but hardly all of the colors found on Brave Combo's musical palette, one can describe them as a groundbreaking world music act, a hot jazz quintet, a rollicking rock'n'roll bar band, a Tex-Mex conjunto, a sizzling blues band, a saucy cocktail combo, a deadly serious novelty act, a Latin orchestra, and one of America's dance bands par excellence. It's all in a night's music for Brave Combo, often in a synergistic fashion that includes everything from klezmer surf rock to rocking cha cha to what The Washington Post calls "mosh pit polka," as well as to the hokey pokey and the chicken dance. And zyedeco, acid rock, Muzak, bubblegum, cumbia, classical, and the twist, to still not exhaust the list. This plethoric multitude of musical styles and flavors is frequently mixed, matched, and melded, into delicious, new concoctions by an imaginative team of musical gourmet master chefs.

Make Me Smile
A concert show Celebrating the music of Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Tower of Power

MAKE ME SMILE
A concert show Celebrating the music of Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Tower of Power
Make Me Smile is a new concert show celebrating the music of Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, Tower of Power, and Blood, Sweat & Tears. In the early 1970's, these four bands -- featuring the new addition of a horn section -- forever changed the sound of American music. During the past four decades, they have sold more than 200 million albums. They've won Grammy's, American Music Awards, and Albums of the Year. Not surprising, they've enjoyed dozens of top ten and number one hits. Make Me Smile is the opportunity for you and your guests to hear those greatest hits performed by an unbelievable line-up of 15 musicians, including the most influential horn section on our planet: The Hornheads (www.hornheads.com). Four world-class vocalists front this terrific show. Make Me Smile: get ready to smile, dance and sing along with the greatest hits from Chicago, B, S & T, Tower of Power and the elements of the universe: Earth, Wind & Fire.

An Evening with Nick Tremulis
AN EVENING WITH NICK TREMULIS
Formed in 1982, the first incarnation of Nicholas Tremulis was described as "Punk Jazz", drawing on early punk music, as well as James Brown funk and the harmolodic jazz movement of Ornette Coleman. A single was released on Disturbing Records in 1983 produced by Craig Williams.
By 1985 the band had morphed into a large modern funk/soul unit and was signed by Chris Blackwell to Island Records, releasing 2 records in the late 80's, "Nicholas Tremulis", produced with Craig Williams and "More Than The Truth", with guest artists Maceo Parker (James Brown) and Bonnie Raitt, produced by Rob Fraboni. (Stones, Dylan, The Band)
After leaving Island in 1989, the new stripped down, loud rock version of the band released an EP "King Of The Hill" in 1994 on Monsterdisc and full-length version "Bloody Show" in 1995 on Black Vinyl Records.
Both releases feature collaborative performances with famed Beat poet Gregory Corso. The album was produced in part with percussionist Michael Blair, (Tom Waits) and Jeff Murphy. (The Shoes)
In 2000, Nicholas Tremulis Band released "In Search Of Woodfoot" on QRS records. A folk rock oriented record featuring a duet with Rick Danko (The Band). The album was recorded by Rick Barnes and Derek Brand, as well as 2 cuts by Rob Fraboni.
From the years 2000 to 2004, the Nicholas Tremulis Orchestra, along with WXRT, The Metro, and Jam Productions hosted a charity concert for Neon Street for Homeless Youth entitled "The Waltz". The annual concert was inspired by "The Band's" filmed farewell concert "The Last Waltz" and features NTO as backing band to guest artists from across the American musical landscape.

The Arts Of Life Band
THE ARTS OF LIFE BAND
The Arts of Life Band makes danceable party music with a rock edge. It is an ongoing collaborative project between disabled and non-disabled artists in the Chicago area, based out of the Arts of Life community of artists and Reversible Eye gallery. The Arts of Life is an artistic community that provides adults with developmental disabilities an environment to experience personal growth. The Arts of Life Band performs at local events and fundraisers, and does rock concerts at venues such as the Empty Bottle and the Double Door.
Artistic Director Ryan Shuquem has collaborated on artistic development with several performing groups including Mucca Pazza, the Parkas, and Circus Ridiculous. Local musicians join him from area favorites Lamajamal, Reddelicious, and Mucca Pazza.
Ryan Shuquem says he is overjoyed by the response the Arts of Life band is getting. "This my favorite band to play with. The artists, local musicians involved, and the fans always have such a blast watching and being part of this experience. It's truly a pleasure, and the songs are fun, catchy, and they rock too."
The Arts of Life Band was recently featured on ABC7-news, performing songs from their debut, self-titled CD.
